Description: In this chapter, we argue that educational and social psychologists working in the achievement goal tradition have done little to explore the relationship between students' social class and their adoption of goals in school classrooms. Given the scarcity of empirical work in this area, and with the aim of encouraging scholarly discussion, we use a psychological perspective on social class to propose three hypotheses about the relationship between social class and achievement goals. We outline some preliminary evidence in support of the hypotheses and discuss implications for future research.
